Regional Heritage Fair Celebrates Delta’s Young Historians

The City of Delta is proud to be hosting its annual Regional Heritage Fair, showcasing the impressive achievements, historical research, and passion for heritage of 24 local students.

The Fair, being held today at the Douglas J. Husband Discovery Centre, promises a day for students filled with heritage activities, workshops, and project adjudication, as well as an awards ceremony recognizing their outstanding hard work and dedication.

"The Regional Heritage Fair provides a platform for local youth to explore, engage with, and appreciate our nation’s history, as well as the figures, events, and cultures that have shaped it," said Mayor George V. Harvie. "By encouraging young minds to delve into our past, developing a love of learning and the ability to think critically about the world around them, we support our youth as they grow into more thoughtful, engaged citizens. I continue to be inspired by the incredible work of these students and I wish them great success at this year’s Fair.”

The Regional Fair includes 24 students in grades 4-7 from four Delta schools—Heath Elementary, Devon Gardens Elementary, Beach Grove Elementary, and English Bluff Elementary. In addition to taking part in engaging activities, students at the Fair will present and be adjudicated on their projects, which span a diverse range of topics, including the George Massey Tunnel, DeltaPort, the history of lacrosse, the Underground Railroad, and the remarkable life of Sir Frederick Banting.

The public will have the opportunity to view student projects from 3:30 to 4:00pm today, Friday, May 3.

At the Fair, three outstanding students will be selected to represent Delta at the Provincial Heritage Fair in Victoria this July, where they will join peers from across British Columbia in celebrating the province's diverse heritage and history.
